Irish cruise in opener as Miles posts triple double in return
Olivia Miles is looking like her old self.
The Notre Dame women’s basketball star put on a dazzling triple double performance in her first game in 21 months as the Irish opened the season with a 105-61 win over Mercyhurst Monday night at Purcell Pavilion.
Miles finished the night with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in 32 minutes of action. It’s her 4th career triple double, 2nd most in ACC history.
“Phenomenal game,” Irish women’s basketball coach Niele Ivey said of Miles’ return to the court. “Made some spectacular passes. It was really amazing to watch.”
Miles said ND’s videographer joked with her that he would need a triple double in her first game back and she said “OK, let me try.”
“It’s awesome to see those meaningless words at the time come to fruition and experience that with my teammates,” Miles continued. “It was special.”
All five Notre Dame starters finished in double figures as Irish fans saw how dynamic the backcourt of Miles and Hidalgo can be. Hidalgo, an All American a season ago, finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and six steals.
Pitt transfer Liatu King was fantastic in her Notre Dame debut, leading all scorers with 24 points and finishing with a 11 rebounds for a double double.
Freshman Kate Koval added 18 points on 9-11 shooting along with seven rebounds and five blocked shots while Cassandre Prosper contributed 17 points and five rebounds.
As a team, the Irish shot 60% from the field. The one area ND struggled in was beyond the arc, making just 3 of 17 attempts from 3 point range.
Notre Dame had only seven available players for the game with Sonia Citron sitting out because of ankle soreness.
