Burton, Shrewsberry score 18 each as Irish men’s hoops rolls in opener
Braeden Shrewsberry hit two 3-pointers during a 10-0 1st half run as the Irish men’s basketball team opened up a double digit lead and never looked back in a 89-60 win over Stonehill in the season opener Wednesday night at Purcell Pavilion.
Notre Dame led just 19-16 midway through the first half before scoring the next 10 points in the next two minutes. Shrewsberry set the tone from beyond the arc, making four of his five trifectas to score a game high 18 points in the game. As a team, the Irish were 11 of 22 from 3-point range.
Penn High School alum and ACC preseason 1st team member Markus Burton also scored 18 points and dished out a game high five assists. Transfer Matt Allocco added 10 as the Irish shot 51% from the field for the game, a strong sign of offensive improvement for a team that struggled greatly in that area a season ago.
Notre Dame’s starting five were Burton, Shrewsberry, Allocco, Kebba Njie and Tae Davis. Davis & Njie each scored 9 when Njie was strong on the boards with 10 rebounds.
Saint Joseph High School alum scored 6 points in 15 minutes of action off the bench.
Notre Dame returns to action Monday night at 7pm when they host Buffalo.
