(Grapevine, Texas) — Notre Dame rose, Indiana fell, but both schools would still have spots in the college football playoffs if the season ended today.

The Fighting Irish are ranked 5th this week by the playoff committee, while the Hoosiers fell to 10th after losing to #2 Ohio State last week.

Ranking is not the same as seeding, as the four highest-ranked conference champions get the top four seeds. That means #1 Oregon, #3 Texas, #6 Miami and #11 Boise State would get the top four seeds.

Because of that, Notre Dame is seeded 7th and Indiana seeded 11th.  If this were to hold, Notre Dame would play host to SMU, while Indiana would visit Penn State in the opening round.

Both teams have work to do this weekend. The Irish travel to Los Angeles to face archrival USC in the regular-season finale, while the Hoosiers play host to Purdue in the annual battle for the Old Oaken Bucket.

The College Football Playoffs begin on campus sites December 20-21, and then go to neutral sites of bowl games for the quarterfinals Dec. 31 and January 1.  Semifinals will be played at the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl on Jan. 9 and 10. The national championship is in Atlanta on January 20th.
