Irish lose twice with Burton out with knee injury

Notre Dame announced that Notre Dame guard and former Penn High School standout Markus Burton will be held out of action on a week-to-week basis after suffering a non season ending knee injury during the Players Era Tournament in Las Vegas Tuesday.

Facing Rutgers, Burton had just scored with a pretty spin move that had him off balance. As Burton fell to the court, Rutgers’ 6-10, 270-pound forward Emmanual Ogbole fell directly on top of Burton’s right knee. Burton got up limping, and went to the end of the Irish bench briefly. In obvious pain, Burton then hobbled back to the Irish locker room. Later in the first half, he returned to the sidelines in a sweat suit, with his right leg propped on a chair.

The Irish would lose the game 85-84 then fell to #6 Houston 65-54 on Wednesday. Notre Dame is now 4-3 after 3 straight losses.

“I couldn’t be more proud of how my teammates competed following my injury, and I know they will pick me up and continue to play well. I look forward to supporting them in any way possible,” Burton said in a statement. “As in everything I do in basketball, I will attack my rehab and give it my best to get back on the floor at full strength as soon as possible. I would like to thank the South Bend & Notre Dame community for the outpouring of support. All the prayers coming my way have been inspiring, and it shows how special my entire hometown community is.”

Irish men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry said he’s thankful Burton will return at full strength this season.

“I have the full faith in our athletic trainer, Nixon Dorvilien, and our entire medical staff to put Markus in the best position to return to the court when it is the right time,” Shrewsberry said.

Burton entered the game averaging over 21 points and five assists per game for the Irish, leading the team in both categories.
