Rough night for ND women’s teams
Both Notre Dame’s women’s basketball and women’s soccer teams suffered losses Friday evening.
The 3rd-ranked women’s basketball squad lost to #17 TCU, 76-68, in the opening round of the Cayman Islands Classic. Niele Ivey’s squad squandered a 14-point second-half lead, as the Irish were outscored, 31-12, in the fourth quarter.
Hannah Hidalgo led all scorers with 27 points, but it wasn’t enough to counter an incredible performance by TCU’s Sedona Prince. The Horned Frogs star scored 20 points with 20 rebounds and eight blocked shots. She was also supported by 21 points from former Louisville star Haley Van Lith, as TCU raised its record to 7-0.
Notre Dame women’s basketball is now 5-1 and faces Utah Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Irish women’s soccer team saw its season end in the Elite Eight, as the Irish succumbed to Stanford, 2-0.
The Cardinal scored goals in the 25th and 50th minutes and managed to thwart Notre Dame at every opportunity. The Irish had beaten the Cardinal, 3-0, during the regular season.
Stanford reaches the College Cup, which will be an all-ACC affair. They’ll be joined by Wake Forest, North Carolina and the winner of tomorrow’s game between Duke and Virginia Tech.
