Purdue fires Walters

(West Lafayette) — Purdue has fired head football coach Ryan Walters after just two seasons.

Walters went 5-19 in his two seasons as a head coach, including a disastrous 1-11 season this year. In his tenure, Walters only posted three wins over Big Ten opponents, all of them in 2023.

Saturday, Purdue lost to archrival Indiana, 66-0, in a game where the Boilermakers only managed 67 yards of total offense. It marked the second game this season where the Boilermakers allowed 66 points, as they also lost to Notre Dame, 66-7.  Ironically, Walters’ defensive background was one of the main reasons behind his hiring two years ago by Purdue athletic director Mike Bobinski.

Walters assumed the offensive play-calling duties after firing offensive coordinator Graham Harrell four games into the season. Outside of a season-opening win against Indiana State, Purdue never scored a first-quarter touchdown and never took an offensive snap with the lead this season.

The Indianapolis Star reports Purdue will still owe Walters 75% of his total compensation through the end of 2027, which amounts to $9.33375 million.  His .208 winning percentage is the worst in Purdue history, and his two-year tenure is the shortest for any non-interim Purdue football coach.
