Cubs acquire All-Star Kyle Tucker
(Chicago) — The Chicago Cubs are acquiring all-star outfielder Kyle Tucker from Houston in exchange for Isaac Paredes, Hayden Wesneski and the Cubs top draft choice from last summer, third baseman Cam Smith.
The 27-year-old Tucker has one year left on his contract before becoming a free agent. He has belted 112 homers over the last four seasons.
Tucker is likely to become the Cubs’ starting right fielder, moving Seiya Suzuki to designated hitter. Suzuki has expressed he does not want to be a DH, and would likely be open to a trade. Outfielder Cody Bellinger is also expected to be on the trade market.
Paredes, 25, spent a half season with the Cubs after being acquired from the Rays last July. He’ll likely serve as a replacement for Alex Bregman at third base if he leaves Houston via free agency. Paredes is a dead pull hitter, useful for the short left field fences at Minute Maid Park. He hit 19 home runs last season, split between Tampa Bay and Chicago.
Wesneski appeared in 68 career games for the Cubs, including 22 as a starter. He has a career 3.93 ERA pitching as a swing man over the last three seasons.
Smith was the Cubs top pick out of Florida State last year and made headlines when he homered in six straight games at A ball for Myrtle Beach. He played in South Bend for 12 games before being promoted to AA Tennessee.
