Colorado’s Travis Hunter wins Heisman Trophy
(New York City) — Colorado’s Travis Hunter was the best wide receiver in the nation. He’s also one of the best defensive backs in the country. And his two-way action has made him a Hesiman Trophy winner.
Hunter outdistanced Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty by over 200 voting points to become Colorado’s first Heisman winner since the late Rashaan Salaam in 1994.
Hunter is a throwback to generations gone by and the first full-time, true two-way star in decades.
On offense, he had 92 catches for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns this season to help the Buffaloes (9-3) earn their first bowl bid in four years. On defense, he made four interceptions, broke up 11 passes and forced a critical fumble that secured an overtime victory against Baylor.
The junior from Suwanee, Georgia, started his career playing for Deion Sanders at Jackson State, an HBCU that plays in the lower level FCS. When Sanders moved to Colorado, Hunter followed and immediately became an impact player.
Hunter finished with 2231 voting points, while Jeanty had 2017. Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel finished third in the voting, with Miami’s Cam Ward fourth.
