Irish hoops squad blows lead at NC State
(Raleigh) — Another game, another blown lead for the Notre Dame men’s basketball team.
Micah Shrewsberry’s squad led by seven with 3:39 to play, only to see North Carolina State close on a 10-2 run to beat the Irish, 66-65, Wednesday night at the Lenovo Center.
The loss drops the Irish to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in ACC play.
After the two teams traded hoops for the first 15 minutes, Notre Dame closed the first half on an 11-3 run, sparked by a Kebba Njie dunk. Njie recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Irish led 33-26 at the break.
NC State made up the deficit midway through the second half, as consecutive fast break buckets by Ben Middlebrooks and Michael O’Connell tied the game at 51 with 8:20 remaining.
A balanced attack seemed to be working for the Irish. Penn alum Markus Burton led the way with 15 points. Tae Davis added 14 and when Braeden Shrewsberry knocked down three of his 13 with 3:39 left, the Irish seemed to be on their way to a league road win.
Marcus Hill played a strong second half for NC State, leading the way with 15 points, and his layup tied the game with 1:07 left. Middlebrooks then hit one of two free throws with 11 seconds left, leaving the Irish with a chance to win. Burton pulled up for a contested jumper in the paint, and left it short off the front rim, missing a potential game-winner for the second straight contest.
The Irish will stay in the Carolinas for the next two days, preparing for a Saturday visit to #4 Duke with tipoff at noon.
