#1 St. Joe blitzes #10 Washington, 96-53

(South Bend) — A good sandwich has plenty of meat in the middle. St. Joseph’s top-ranked basketball team served up a real good sandwich Thursday night.
The Huskies scored 31 points in the second quarter and 32 more in the third on the way to a 96-53 trouncing of 10th-ranked Washington before a nice crowd at Alumni Gym.
Chase Konieczny scored 31 points and Nick Shrewsberry added 23 as Eric Gaff’s team raised its record 12-1 (2-0 in Northern Indiana Conference play. The loss drops Washington to 9-2 (1-1)
St. Joseph remains tied with Marian and Penn for the league lead. Marian had to rally from six points down in the fourth quarter to down Elkhart, 61-56, while Penn broke open a halftime tie with New Prairie to rip the Cougars, 73-49. Freshman Caleb Coolman scored 20 for the Kingsmen.
In the only other NIC game tonight, Riley topped city rival Adams, 70-51. Isaiah Packer led four Wildcats in double figures with 15 points.
