Bears hiring Lions OC Ben Johnson as new head coach
The Chicago Bears are finalizing a deal to hire Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as the team’s next head coach.
The report was first made by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and confirmed by multiple Chicago reporters.
Johnson, who has been the Lions’ offensive coordinator the past three seasons, will fill the job vacated when Matt Eberflus was fired during the season.
Johnson had rebuffed head coaching offers over the last few years, but found the opportunity to work with last year’s #1 draft pick, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, too good to pass.
The 38-year-old Johnson worked his way up the NFL coaching ladder. He spent seven seasons on the Miami Dolphins’ staff and then moved to the Lions. In Detroit he worked up from offensive quality control coach to tight ends coach to passing game coordinator to offensive coordinator over the course of five seasons. In his three seasons as Lions offensive coordinator, he became the hottest name among NFL assistants as a future head coach.
Johnson is reported to be targeting former Saints head coach Dennis Allen as his defensive coordinator.
