(Coral Gables, FL) — Notre Dame thought a trip to the Sunshine State was the perfect chance to build some momentum in its season.

Ain’t no sunshine tonight.

Micah Shrewsberry’s Irish blew a 13-point second-half lead and handed Miami its first ACC win of the season, falling 63-57 Saturday night at the Watsco Center.

The litany of second-half failures for the Irish is lengthy…nine turnovers, 38 percent shooting from the floor, a woeful 0-5 from the foul line and failing to score in the final 3:40 charted a path to misery.  Notre Dame is now 10-11 overall and 4-6 in ACC play.

Miami entered the game having lost 17 of its last 18 and appeared headed that way again, trailing 40-27 early in the second half.  But the ‘Canes did not make a turnover in the second half and outscored the visitors 11-0 on points off turnovers to work their way back. Matthew Cleveland scored two of his game-high 21 points with 6:10 remaining and Miami grabbed a 55-53 lead.

Notre Dame tied the game at 57 when Tae Davis dunked home two of his 11 points, but the Irish would not score again, collecting three missed field goal attempts, three missed free throws and three turnovers the rest of the way. Lynn Kidd made a free throw and a jumper to give the ‘Canes the lead they would not relinquish.

Markus Burton led the way for Notre Dame with 17 points. The Irish head to northern Florida to face Florida State in Tallahassee Tuesday night.
