Warsaw rallies to beat #1 HSE; Tigers to play for girls basketball state title

Indiana’s first ever girls basketball state champion will play for the state title in the IHSAA’s 50th year of girls basketball.

Down six after three quarters in the SemiState Championship game to the #1 team in the state, Warsaw rallied to win 67-61 over Hamilton Southeastern to advance to the 4A girls basketball state championship game.

The Tigers will face Lawrence North (18-8) in the state finals next Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Lawarence North defeated Pike 45-44.

Warsaw will be making their first trip to the state finals since 2004. They also played for the state championship in 1991. The Tigers won the 1st ever girls basketball state championship in 1976 and followed up with their only other state title in 1978.

The loss is the first of the season for Hamilton Southeastern while Warsaw improved to 26-1 on the season, having defeated McCutcheon 66-48 in the semifinals at Frankfort earlier in the day.

Marquette Catholic saw their season end in the 1A SemiState Championship Game 53-50 to Lafayette Central Catholic in overtime. Whitko and Elkhart Christian lost earlier in the day in the semifinal round.
