(Raleigh) — All good things must come to an end. For Notre Dame women’s basketball, that good thing was a 19-game win streak and likely, the #1 ranking.
#13 North Carolina State won its 20th straight home game Sunday afternoon, outlasting the Irish in double overtime, 104-95, at Reynolds Coliseum. The loss drops the Irish to 24-3 overall and 15-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Sophomore Zoe Brooks led the way for NC State, scoring a game-high 33 points, including a perfect 14-of-14 at the free throw line. In fact, the Wolfpack were a remarkable 24-of-26 for the game at the charity stripe.
Hannah Hidalgo needed 26 shots to score 26 points, as the Irish shot only 41 percent from the field and a mere 26 percent from three-point range in the loss. Sonia Citron added 23 points, while Olivia Miles tallied 22 before fouling out.
The back-and-forth game featured 21 ties and 21 lead changes as the two foes battled back-and-forth. Notre Dame never led by more than three points. Prior to the second overtime, the Wolfpack never led by more than six.
That six-point lead occurred midway through the third quarter, before Citron posted six points in a 9-0 run that gave the Irish a brief lead. The game remained a one-possession game from that point on, as neither team had more than a three-point lead. Citron canned a triple just before the regulation buzzer to force overtime.
The first overtime was delayed as fan suffered a medical emergency in the stands. NC State’s Aziah James scored two of her 20 points on a jumper with 20 seconds left in overtime to tie the game at 92, and Miles’ three-pointer at the buzzer clanked off the iron.
The second overtime was all NC State, as the Pack opened the stanza with a 10-0 run before Miles hit a three-pointer with 27 seconds remaining.
Notre Dame returns home Thursday night, facing Florida State in an 8 p.m. tipoff at Purcell Pavilion.
