(Greensboro, N.C.) — Three weeks ago, Notre Dame’s women were ranked #1 in the country and on a roll.

Now the Irish have lost three out of five and have two weeks to sit and stew.

The latest derailment occurred Saturday afternoon as Duke eliminated Notre Dame  from the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament with a 61-56 triumph in the semifinal round. The Blue Devils will meet top-seed NC State in the championship game Sunday.

The Blue Devils avenged a regular-season loss for the second day in a row after topping Louisville on Friday. This outcome came despite committing 21 turnovers. Oluchi Okananwa came off the bench with 14 points and didn’t miss a shot, going 3 for 3 with two 3-pointers and 6 for 6 on free throws.

Duke scored the last six points of the third quarter for a 47-42 lead as the Irish didn’t score for three-plus minutes. The first points of the fourth quarter came on Okananwa’s 3-pointer. Notre Dame made only 3 of 15 attempts on 3-pointers. The Irish missed their lone fourth-quarter attempt.

Hannah Hidalgo led Notre Dame with 23 points, but needed 22 shots to get there. The Irish shot a miserable 38 percent and made 16 turnovers.  The starting frontcourt of Liatu King and Maddy Westbeld scored no points, and the Irish were outrebounded, 38-26.

At 26-5 for the season, Notre Dame will still be a top-four seed for the NCAA Tournament and host first- and second-round games after selections are announced St. Patrick’s Day.
