St. Joe seniors laud “special bond”

(South Bend) — They are a quartet with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, but together the four seniors on St. Joe’s boys basketball team have created a special bond and provided leadership.

Saturday, they want to cap their careers with the 3A state championship when they face Crispus Attucks at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Luke Trinter is a crowd favorite, despite his limited playing time. He’s the one who keeps everybody loose.

“They’re probably some of my closest friends on the team,” smiles Trinter. “Four years ago…it just kinda flew by. We’ve played together so long, knew them for so long, the bond is so tight.”

Brashaun Woods is the captain of the team. He keeps things upbeat as well, but with a level-headed approach.

“I gotta lead through the ups-and-downs,” states Woods. “Keep us together, keep us composed and make sure we’re playing the game the right way.”

Chase Konieczny is clearly the team’s star, as one of the top 50 scorers in Indiana high school history. But he’s quick to note the cameraderie within this senior group.

“I just see all the hard work and effort we’ve done, even past the four years I’ve been here,” recalls Konieczny. “It just means the world to me, especially to do it with these guys. These guys are my best friends on and off the court.”

A.J. Boone has persevered in his four years, overcoming two ACL surgeries. Like Trinter, he spent some time on JV, but says that has made no difference in this senior group.

“I don’t think I would fit in that well anywhere else,” admits Boone. “I feel they brought me in well, for me not even considering the school when I was in middle school up until my eighth-grade year. I feel like they brought me in as a family, like one of their own, and I appreciate that a lot.”
