Angeli enters transfer portal

(Notre Dame) — And then there were two.

Notre Dame’s three-man quarterback battle lost its veteran today when Steve Angeli entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. The 6-3, 205-pounder our of Bergen Catholic in New Jersey will graduate with his Notre Dame degree next month and have two years of eligibility remaining.

Angeli played sparingly in his time at Notre Dame, but still completed 72.5 percent of his passes for 10 touchdowns and just one interception. His shining moment came in the Orange Bowl against Penn State, when he replaced an injured Riley Leonard late in the first half and engineered a scoring drive, completing six of seven passes for 44 yards.

His only career start came in the 2023 Sun Bowl, after Sam Hartman declared for the NFL Draft. IN a win over Oregon State, Angeli completed 15-of-19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns.

Angeli entered the spring in a three-an competition with sophomore Kenny Minchey and freshman C.J. Carr.  Carr is considered the best passer of the group, while Minchey is regarded as the best runner, but still has a strong arm. That left Angeli as the odd-man out, so he will take his talents elsewhere.

That also means when Notre Dame takes the field against Miami, Fla. on August 31 at Hard Rock Stadium, the Irish will feature a quarterback who has never started a college football game.  Minchey has taken snaps in four games, completing all three of his passes and rushing for a touchdown against Purdue last season. Carr took some mo-up snaps against the Boilermakers last year in his only game action.
