Angeli to transfer to Syracuse, ND’s opponent on Senior Day
Steve Angeli may very well be starting at Notre Dame Stadium on Senior Day after all.
Just not for Notre Dame.
The veteran quarterback who will get his Notre Dame degree next month, announced on Twitter/X Wednesday night that he will transfer to Syracuse.
Notre Dame will host Syracuse on Senior Day on November 22nd. The two teams will meet again in 2026 in Syracuse. Angeli has two years of eligibility remaining, meaning he could play against his old team twice.
The 6-3, 205-pounder out of Bergen Catholic New Jersey will have a familiar face in Upstate New York. Syracuse’s offensive coordinator Nunzio Campanile is the brother of Angeli’s high school head coach Vito Campanile.
Angeli will look to replace Kyle McCord as the Syracuse starting quarterback but may be in another quarterback competition. Rickie Collins was set to be the Syracuse starter in 2025, after transferring in from LSU in December. McCord had a prolific season at Syracuse in his one year of eligibility after transferring in from Ohio State. He led the Orange to a 10-3 record under 1st year coach Fran Brown.
Angeli played sparingly in his time at Notre Dame, but still completed 72.5 percent of his passes for 10 touchdowns and just one interception. His shining moment came in the Orange Bowl against Penn State, when he replaced an injured Riley Leonard late in the first half and engineered a scoring drive, completing six of seven passes for 44 yards.
His only career start came in the 2023 Sun Bowl, after Sam Hartman declared for the NFL Draft. IN a win over Oregon State, Angeli completed 15-of-19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns.
Angeli entered the spring in a three-an competition with sophomore Kenny Minchey and freshman C.J. Carr. Carr is considered the best passer of the group, while Minchey is regarded as the best runner, but still has a strong arm. That left Angeli as the odd-man out.
That also means when Notre Dame takes the field against Miami, Fla. on August 31 at Hard Rock Stadium, the Irish will feature a quarterback who has never started a college football game. Minchey has taken snaps in four games, completing all three of his passes and rushing for a touchdown against Purdue last season. Carr took some warm-up snaps against the Boilermakers last year in his only game action.
