(Hamilton, Mich) — The Sturgis Trojans are bringing home a girls track state championship.

Spurred by sprinter Keyanna O’Tey, the Trojans won titles in two relays and the discus and claimed the MHSAA Division 2 crown at Hamilton High School Saturday.   Sturgis is the first Southwest Michigan school to win a girls track state championship since Benton Harbor in 1984.

First, Sturgis nabbed first place in the women’s 4 x 200-meter relay, as the quartet of Addison Eicher, Hannah Garbine, Sydney Bir and Keyanna O’Tey made their laps in 1:42.80, edging Berrien Springs for the crown. Lakeshore finished 4th.

Then Tenley Banaszak, Angela Cary, Garbine and O’Tey also raced to the 4x 100 championship in 48.48 seconds, again just topping runner-up Berrien Springs.  Benton Harbor placed fifth in that event.

In fact, Sturgis scored in every relay, placing third n the 4 x 800 and fifth in the 4 x 400.

The Trojans also claimed a state crown in the discus, as Eleena Kelley’s heave of 135-9 won by two-and-a-half feet over the nearest competitor.

The big point-scorer was O’Tey. The senior added to her two relay crowns with a runner-up finish in the 100 meter dash, and third-place in the 200. Sturgis racked up a team total of 54.2 points, 15 better than runner-up Goodrich.

It is also a day to jump for joy throughout Southwest Michigan, as three area high school jumpers are bringing home MHSAA Division 2 state championships.

Lakeshore sweeps both the boys and girls long jump titles, and in record-setting fashion. Sophomore Kaden Griffiths captured the boys crown for the second straight year, setting a school and state finals record with a leap of 24-feet and one-quarter inch.  St. Joseph’s Jack Humes finished sixth, while Niles’ Andre Wells came in seventh.

Meanwhile, Griffith’s school mate, Leigha Whitman also set a state record with a jump of 18-feet, 11-1/2 inches to capture the girls title.  Her leap was seven inches better than Benton Harbor’s Jayda Beene, who finished second. DeAria Evans, also of Benton Harbor, finished 7th.

Lakeshore came close to three titles, but Edwardsburg junior Zach Overmyer soared to a personal best of 6-8 in the high jump to win the Division 2 boys title. Lakeshore sophomore Declin Doroh also hit 6-8, but had more misses at that height, so he finishes as runner-up. David Wills of Three Rivers finished 4th.
