Upsets abound in baseball sectional finals
Sectional championship night in the IHSAA baseball tournament had almost as many surprises as expected outcomes.
Now maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise when a defending 3A state champion wins a sectional, but New Prairie had to overcome a ton of adversity this season and then the Cougars were matched up with 5th-ranked Saint Joseph. That didn’t matter to Mark Schellinger’s squad, which prevailed, 7-4. Beau Kmiecik had a two-run double and slammed the door in relief to get the save.
New Prairie will meet NorthWood in the regional, as the Panthers downed West Noble, 8-3. Connor Reed fanned 12, while Ryder Ransberger drove in three runs to lead the offense.
In Class 4A, Goshen wins its first sectional since 2008, surprising Northridge, 7-1. Bray Hoag went 4-for-4 with two RBI, while Ryen Diaz threw a complete game, scattering seven hits. J.J. DuBois’ Red Hawks entered the tournament just 9-13 on the season, but allowed just one run in the sectional.
Now Goshen will meet the Goliath known as Penn, as the state’s top-ranked team scored five runs in the sixth inning to top LaPorte, 10-5. LSU commit Mason Braun stroked the go-ahead double off the left-field wall, as the Kingsmen raised their record to 28-1.
In Class 2A, the favorites prevailed as both Jimtown and Westview claimed sectional trophies. At Booster Field, the Jimmies smacked longtime rival Bremen, 10-1. Broderic Kaler homered, while Dalton Cook collected three hits and three RBI. Jimtown meets Boone GRove in the regional.
Westview wins its third straight sectional with a 4-1, nine-inning triumph over conference rival Lakeland. Max Engle was spectacular again on the mound, striking out 10, and his brother Gavin came in to get the win. Maverick Deveau had a big two-run hit in the 9th to boost the Warriors, who now face Adams Central in the regional.
In 1A, Triton earns its first sectional crown in 10 years, blanking Elkhart Christian, 14-0. Drew Bingamon went 4-for-4 at the plate and picked up the mound win. The Trojans will face Fort Wayne Canterbury in the regional.
Regional sites and times will be determined and announced by the IHSAA Wednesday.
