Area softball teams endure rough regional round

There’s a saying that good pitching beats good hitting. For Michiana softball teams, there was way too much good pitching Tuesday night.

Of the five Sports Michiana area teams in action Tuesday night, only South Central advanced, as the Satellites won the 1A regional with a 9-0 triumph over Fremont in Union Mills. Lexi Johnson struck out 15 Eagles, while tossing a two-hitter and belting two doubles herself. Marlee Cavinder drove in three for the Satellites, who capture their seventh regional crown in school history.

In 3A, a big crowd in Walkerton saw visiting Columbia City end John Glenn’s season with an 8-3 triumph. The Falcons, making their first regional appearance in school history, jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the 2nd. That’s when the Eagles started swinging the bats, tallying four in the third and two runs in the fourth to put the game away.

In 2A, Andrean’s Sadie Drousias tossed a one-hitter as the 59ers ended Knox’ magical run, 5-0.  The Redskins wrap up the season with a 14-16 record.

In the other area 2A regional, Rossville thunders past Rochester, 9-2.  A seven-run third inning for the Hornets was the difference. Rochester ends a fine season at 21-5.

And in 1A, North Newton blanks Westville, 4-0. Sydney Raisnford fanned 12 and twirled a three-hitter for the Spartans. Westville ends its season at 19-6.

Wednesday night, the 4A regional is scheduled to be played with Elkhart visiting Penn. However, there is an 80 percent chance of rain. The game was pushed back due to Elkhart’s graduation ceremonies Tuesday night.
