Elkhart County baseball teams fall in Final Four
A pair of Elkhart County baseball teams saw their state championship bids end at the Final Four Saturday night.
At Four Winds Field in South Bend, Goshen’s Cinderella run through the postseason saw the clock strike midnight, as the Red Hawks fell to Valparaiso, 4-1.
Kyan Miller’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth gave Goshen a 1-0 lead, but Valpo answered quickly, scoring two in the fifth and two in the sixth. Senior Trevor Fenters was masterful on the mound for the Vikings, tossing a one-hitter while striking out 11. Maximus Reaume drove in a pair of runs for Valpo, which will take a 25-5 record to Victory Field for their first 4A state finals appearance.
J.J. DuBois’ Goshen squad closes the year with an overall record of 13-14, but made the deepest tournament run in program history.
In Class 3A, NorthWood was blanked by top-ranked Andrean, 4-0, in the LaPorte Semistate championship.
The pitching combination of Bradin Branigan and Kaden Maxwell stifled the NorthWood bats much of the night. Steven Mack homered for the 59ers, who will play for their 9th state title next weekend, facing Jasper.
Zach Benko’s Panthers end the year at 21-13.
As a side note, nearby Porter County will have three teams representing at next week’s state finals. Boone Grove won the 2A semistate, while Kouts captured the 1A semistate crown.
