Two NLC teams reach HS baseball final four

Two Northern Lakes Conference baseball teams will be playing in Final Four games tonight in Northern Indiana.

At Four Winds Field, Goshen continued its improbable run through the Class 4A tournament, upsetting Westfield, 5-2.  The Red Hawks will meet Valparaiso in the semistate championship tonight at 7 p.m.

Westfield took a 2-0 lead after two, but Goshen responded with a four-run third, keyed by a two-run triple by Braxton Cline. That was more than enough for Ryen Diaz, who sparkled for the second straight Saturday, fanning seven in a complete-game victory.

Valparaiso punched its ticket with a 7-0 whitewash of Fort Wayne Snider. Notre Dame commit Caden Crowell fired a no-hitter, needing just 103 pitches to finish off the Panthers.

In Class 3A at LaPorte, NorthWood also relied on strong pitching to pick up a 3-1 triumph over Norwell. The Panthers will face eight-time state champion Andrean in the semistate final at Schreiber Field.

Connor Reed pitched six solid innings for the Panthers, before Nate Dutkowski came on in the 7th inning, striking out two to earn the save.  Reed also starred with the bat, blooping a two-run single in the sixth to give the Panthers some much-needed cushion.

The news was not as good in Class 2A for Westview, as the Warriors feel to Boone Grove by a 5-1 count. Davian Carerra drove in three runs for the Wolves, while Boone Grove ace Seth Pitcock fanned 11 in the win.

Sports Michiana will have updated results from the Goshen and NorthWood games later tonight.
