Haliburton injured as Pacers fall to the Thunder in NBA Finals
The Pacers had overcome the odds A LOT this season but Sunday night they couldn’t overcome losing their star player.
Tyrese Haliburton went down in the 1st quarter and the Thunder finally took control in the 2nd half, defeating Indiana 103-91 to win the NBA Championship in seven games.
Haliburton entered the game battling a calf injury but looked as dangerous as ever, making three early 3-point attempts. Moments later, he went down with an injury, banging the court with his hands in obvious pain. He left the game and did not return. His father confirmed to ESPN that it was an Achilles injury.
The Pacers, like they’ve done all season, continued to battle and led 48-47 at halftime on the road in Oklahoma City.
The heavily favored Thunder took control in the 3rd quarter, however, turning a one point deficit into a 13 point lead heading to the 4th quarter. The lead grew to more than 20 in the 4th quarter. The Pacers made one more big run, but it wasn’t enough and the Thunder celebrated their first NBA title in Oklahoma City.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led all scores with 29 points while dishing out 12 assists. He was the NBA Finals MVP. Jalen Williams added 20 points for the Thunder.
With Haliburton out, the Pacers got key contributions off the bench. Bennedict Mathurin led Indiana with 24. TJ McConnell added 16. Big man starter Pascal Siakam also scored 16.
After a promising playoff run, the Pacers now enter the offseason with a ton of uncertainty as they await official word on the extent of the injury Haliburton suffered and how much he may miss of next season.
