Irish continue hot recruiting with WR commitments
Notre Dame’s football recruiting has definitely been on an uptick under Marcus Freeman, but if there is one position that has frustrated Irish fans, it has been wide receiver.
Friday and Saturday may have eased those frustrations.
Two sons of former NFL receivers, Kaydon Finley and Devyn Fitzgerald, have both committed to the Irish in the last two days. Finley is the son of former Green Bay Packers standout Jermichael Finley. Fitzgerald is the son of Arizona Cardinals legend Larry Fitzgerald.
Their addition brings the Irish to 24 verbal commitments for the 2026 recruiting class, with the possibility of at least three more additions before the end of July. With the new rules regarding NIL, college football teams are no longer limited to 25 recruits/95 scholarships per season.
Finley is considered a four-star player out of the state of Texas, and he chose the Irish over the Longhorns, his father’s alma mater. Fitzgerald currently has a three-star ranking, but his play Brophy Prep in Phoenix, Arizona had the attention of schools such as Clemson, UCLA and Stanford.
Freeman has impressed a number of former NFL players with his program, especially wide receivers. In this year’s freshman class, the Irish have Elijah Burress, son of Plexico Burress, and Jerome Bettis, Jr., the son of the legendary Irish fullback.
“The reason he chose Notre Dame is the connection he had with Coach Freeman and the staff,” said father Larry Fitzgerald to 24/7 Sports. “The university is a really special place and Coach Freeman has done an unbelievable job of bringing the program back to prominence.”
The Irish could add one more receiver Sunday, as Brayden Robinson is expected to choose between Notre Dame, Miami (Fla.) and Arizona. After the last two commitments, Notre Dame is currently considered to have a top-five recruiting class, along with USC, Georgia, Texas A&M and Alabama.
