Jett Lawrence dominates at Red Bud

(Buchanan) — Jett Lawrence is living up to his name on the Pro Motocross Circuit.

The 21-year-old Australian continued his undefeated season in the 450cc class, winning both motos to take the checkered flag before a big and boisterous crowd at Red Bud Track ‘n Trail Saturday.  It’s his second win at the fabled Buchanan track.

Lawrence dedicated his race to the family of 16-year-old Aiden Zingg, who died in a motocross race in California last Saturday.

“I rode my heart out for the Zingg family today,” Lawrence told NBC after the race. “We lost a really young fellow this week. It was a tragic week. My heart goes out to the family and I pray for them.”

This one didn’t come easily for Lawrence on the track either. After cruising to a win in the first moto of the day, Lawrence crashed on the opening lap of the second moto, falling to 18th. But the steady Aussie quickly used his Honda cycle to pick his way through the field. First, he passed his brother Hunter Lawrence for third place, chased down Spaniard Jorge Prado for second and then outleaped Justin Cooper with about five minutes left in the race to take the lead.

Last year’s Red Bud winner, Chase Sexton, tried to pursue Lawrence through the field, but Sexton fell on one of Red Bud’s rutted hairpin turns late in the race, tumbling to fifth overall.

“I didn’t get an ideal start,” admitted Lawrence. “I made a silly mistake. I think I wanted too much early. I made it hard for myself, but I put my heart in that one.”

Hunter Lawrence wound up finishing second in the overall standings, marking the fifth time this year the Aussie brothers have finished 1-2 on the podium.

There was a surprise in the 250cc class, as points leader Hayden Deegan suffered a crash in the first moto that left him bruised up and he finished 14th in the moto and 5th on the day. Japan’s Jo Shimoda made it a great day for Honda, taking both motos and posting his first win since the end of the 2023 season.  Florida’s Jalek Swoll, just back from an Achilles injury, finished second overall.
