Shrewsberry talks “Coaches vs. Cancer”, ND hoops

(Notre Dame) — Micah Shrewsberry wasn’t taking any golf shots at Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course today. Instead, he was taking his best shot at helping in the battle with cancer.

“Trying to help in a bunch of different ways,” said the third-year Irish men’s basketball coach at today’s “Coaches vs. Cancer” golf fundraiser. “This, for us and our family, is something that is really important. Coach (Mike) Brey did such a great job with this, really starting it here in Michiana, so it’s something we wanted to continue. This is something we can rally behind and try to help in this community.”

The area has proven to be one of the best in the nation in supporting the “Coaches vs Cancer” and Shrewsberry feels the momentum is continuing.

“Last night we raised over $510,000 at the gala, which puts us over $5 million all-time,” lauds the Irish coach. “We just want to keep setting the standard and showing what this area can do in terms of raising money.”

Of course, talk with both the media and last night’s audience also drifted to basketball, as fans are awaiting the schedule release and hoping to see Notre Dame’s first winning season under Shrewsberry.

“I think our continuity is a little bit different than a lot of people around the country having seven guys back,” Shrewsberry told Sports Michiana. “It might not sound like a lot, but we can talk about things and guys are doing it already. We made some changes to some stuff schematically in what we’re doing, but they’ve picked up on it really well. I think they’ve come with an unbelievable attitude.”

In addition to the returners, the Irish brought in what is regarded as a top-10 recruiting class, highlighted by five-star guard Jalen Haralson, along with other highly-regarded recruits like Ryder Frost and Brady Koehler.  The transfer portal also brought in the nation’s leading rebounder in 6-8 forward Carson Towt from Northern Arizona.

A Notre Dame spokesman told Sports Michiana the non-conference schedule is still waiting approval from some inside the university, but could be released by week’s end.
