Notre Dame releases depth chart before opener at Miami

Notre Dame has released its depth chart ahead of its season opener at Miami Sunday night.

Of course, we know, already that CJ Carr will start at quarterback.

One position that remains up for grabs is at right guard where redshirt freshman Guerby Lambert (6-7, 335 pounds) is battling redshirt sophomore Sullivan Absher (6-8, 327 pounds). Head coach Marcus Freeman said Tuesday that the two are still competing and they hope to settle in on a starter by the end of Wednesday’s practice. He said both could play Sunday regardless of who ends up the starter. The two are battling to fill the spot opened up when Charles Jagusah was injured in an off the field ATV accident this summer.

The rest of the offensive line is as expected: left tackle Anthonie Knapp, left guard Billy Schrauth, center Ashton Craig and right tackle Aamil Wagner.

Jeremiyah Love will start at running back and Eli Raridon at tight end. Virginia transfer Malachi Fields and Jordan Faison will start at wide receiver with Jaden Greathouse and captain Will Pauling in a battle for the final starting spot at wideout.

On the defensive side of the ball, Boubacar Traore is ready to go from injury and will start at vyper. The other defensive end starter is Bryce Young. While he won’t start, Jordan Botelho is listed on the 2-deep and coach Freeman said Botelho is “available” for Sunday.

Jason Onye and captain Donovan Hinish have won the starting jobs on the interior defensive line over Gabe Rubio and Jared Dawson.

“That defensive tackle position was probably the biggest question mark I had coming into training camp and has probably given me the most conviction of any position group on our team,” Freeman said. “Credit Coach Washington first for keeping that group together, driven. There are multiple guys that are going to play and have played and practiced as well as any position group in camp.”

Freeman says Onye is playing as well at defensive tackle as anyone since Freeman has been at Notre Dame. He also said Hinish is making him forget about the ‘older 41’ aka Donovan’s older brother Kurt who graduated a few years ago. He also praised Rubio and Dawson.

Jaylen Sneed and captain Drayk Bowen will start at linebacker but expect to see a lot of Jaiden Ausberry and Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa behind them.

Virginia Tech transfer Jalen Stroman has won the battle at safety opposite of captain Adon Shuler. No surprise, Christian Gray and Leonard Moore will start at cornerback  while Alabama transfer DeVonta Smith will lineup at nickel.

Noah Burnette is the the field goal and PAT kicker while Marcello Diomede will handle kickoffs. James Rendell is the punter with Joseph Vinci serving as long snapper and Tyler Buchner as holder.

Jordan Faison and Will Pauling are listed as the punt returners while Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price are listed on kickoff return.

Mishawaka alum & tight end Justin Fisher (knee), tight end Cooper Flanagan (achilles), offensive lineman Devan Houstan (knee), offensive lineman Charles Jagusah (arm) & offensive lineman Peter Jones (ankle) are all listed as out for this game.

Tight end Kevin Bauman (knee), running back Dylan Devezin (shoulder), safety Brandon Logan (shoulder) and running back Kedren Young (knee) are listed as out for the season.
