Notre Dame Basketball unveils new jersey to pay homage to South Bend

The Notre Dame men’s and women’s basketball team have unveiled new “The Bend” jerseys that they will wear on special occasions in the upcoming season to pay homage to the local community.

The jerseys are black and gold with “The Bend” written across the chest, which was inspired by the marquee “South Bend” wall on the side of the Madison Oyster bar in downtown. The numbers are a custom font inspired by the classic Studebaker cars. Even the side of the shorts have a tie. The lines running up the side of the uniform are from the South Bend flag, which gives a nod to the St. Joseph River. The South Bend city flag itself is also on the waistband of the shorts.

The Bend jerseys will open up the new season for each team with the men’s team wearing them on November 7th vs Detroit Mercy and the women’s team sporting them on November 9th against Chicago State. The jersey will also be used for a few select games during the rest of the season.

Fans will be able to purchase “The Bend” retail items beginning Friday at 9am both online and at the Notre Dame bookstores.

The teams will also wear them during a tipoff event at Eddy Street Commons on Friday that is free and open to the public. Community programming will take place from 12-5 p.m. The Irish Jam main event with the Irish basketball programs starts promptly at 6 p.m.
