Successful Saturday for Michiana prep teams

It was a great day for a number of Michiana high school teams involved in IHSAA tournament action Saturday.

SOCCER

At the Kokomo soccer semistate, both Bremen and Marian’s girls teams captured semistate titles to advance to next weekend’s state championship games. Londyn Grounds scored a pair of goals to lead Bremen past previously unbeaten Lapel, 4-0, to earn the 1A northern berth.  The Lions, who make their first state championship appearance, will face Heritage Christian in next weekend’s title tilt. Game dates and times will be announced Sunday,

Marian will represent the north for the second straight season in the Class 2A championship, after the Lady Knights downed Delta, 2-0. Kendall Bradley scored both goals for Marian, which will square off with Park Tudor in the state final.

On the boys side, Lafayette Harrison ended one of the best soccer seasons in John Adams history with a 1-0 decision in the 3A semistate at Chesterton. Octavio Chavez scored the game’s only goal in the 61st minute, as the Eagles conclude with a record of 16-3-2.

CROSS COUNTRY

Northridge’s boys continued their spectacular season, as the Raiders used an individual title from Baylor Miller to help grab the New Prairie Regional championship.

With four runners in the top 12, Northridge easily outdistanced second-place Penn by 47 points.  Miller finished the 3.1 mile race in 15:41, while teammate Brady Hicks was less than four seconds behind for third place overall, sandwiching Westview star Noah Bontrager.

Like their male counterparts, Penn’s girls also finished second, losing to Lake Central by just a single point. Lila Van Hoveln and Shreya Nayee finished fourth and fifth overall to pace the Lady Kingsmen.

At Huntington, Warsaw’s Jackson Gackenheimer took individual honors in the boys race. The steady senior blistered the Huntington University course in 15:14.2, nearly 15 seconds better than his nearest competitor.

Warsaw’s girls advanced to next week’s state finals with a fourth-place finish overall. The Tigers were paced by Samantha Rastrelli, as the senior finished sixth individually.

VOLLEYBALL

Five local teams captured regional championships, and two will play each other in next week’s semistate.

Marian and NorthWood will collide in the 3A semistate noon game at Huntington North next Saturday, after both claimed regional titles. Marian swept Hammond Noll in the LaPorte regional, while NorthWood rallied to top Hanover Central, 3-1, in its own regional.  For the Panthers, it’s their fourth straight regional title.

Penn reigns as the 4A regional champion, sweeping Warsaw, 3-0. The Lady Kingsmen make their second consecutive semistate appearance, playing Crown Point in the 10 am game at Rochester.

Lakeland swept past Jimtown, 3-0, to claim the 2A regional crown. The Lakers now head to the Peru semistate for a noon clash with South Adams next Saturday.

Triton is the area’s 1A representative, dispatching of Fort Wayne Canterbury, 3-0, in the regional championship at Homestead. The Trojans will be in Frankfort next Saturday at noon, squaring off with Rossville.

TENNIS

The Brownsburg duo of Ethan Cougill and Skyler Rose grabbed the state doubles title today, by beating a pair of Michiana squads.

In the semifinals, Cougill and Rose topped Penn’s tandem of Josh Weaver and Aaron Yoon, 7-5, 6-2. Then in the championship match, the Brownsburg pairing downed Culver Academies’ James Bartelme and Emiliano Ornelas, 6-1, 6-3.
