A wild night of high school football found three area teams hoisting regional trophies and one area star shattering national records
At Rice Field, Nathan Potter booted a 48-yard field goal as time expired and Concord downs Lafayette Jefferson, 47-45, to win the 5A regional crown. The Minutemen scored a touchdown on a 20-yard run by Bo Brunner with 46 seconds remaining, but the two-point conversion failed, leaving Concord trailing 45-44. Concord then recovered the onside kick, setting the stage for Potter’s heroics.
The Minutemen will visit Merrillville next Friday in the semistate, after the Pirates eliminated Michigan City, 34-14.
In Class 4A, St. Joe scored on a end around option pass from Dallas Downey to James Criniti late in the third quarter and used a tenacious defense to down Hobart, 10-7. The win is the 500th in school history and marks Saint Joseph’s eighth regional title. St. Joe now visits Fort Wayne Dwenger in next week’s semistate. Watch a Replay HERE!
Myles McLaughlin carried the ball 53 times for 372 yards and four touchdowns as Knox holds off Angola, 28-21, claiming the 3A regional crown for the second straight year. McLaughlin now holds the single-season rushing record with 4,768 yards and the national single-season touchdown record with 71 touchdowns. He also made the game-clinching interception in the final minute with the Hornets driving deep in Knox territory.
Knox visits Fort Wayne Luers next Friday, as the Knights defeated Twin Lakes, 14-7.
