Notre Dame stays at #9; IU at #2 in latest CFP Rankings

With the top 14 teams in last week’s College Football Playoff Rankings all winning, this week’s rankings had little movement highlighted by #2 Indiana (11-0) and #9 Notre Dame (9-2) holding in their same spots.

Notre Dame is now 2-2 against the current top 25 with wins over #17 USC and #22 Pitt and losses to #3 Texas A&M and #12 Miami. The Hurricanes are now just 3 spots back of the Irish as they continue to try and push the conversation that they should move ahead of Notre Dame because of their head-to-head win to open the season.

CFP Chair Hunter Yurachek says Notre Dame and Miami are now being compared in the same tier but they are also being compared with Alabama and BYU.

“The committee still feels that Notre Dame is a complete team and has been consistent throughout the season and deserves to be ranked where they are at #9 ahead of Alabama, a really good 2-loss team with some great wins and a 1-loss BYU team,” Yurachek said on ESPN’s College Football Playoff show. “And then Miami falls in accordingly.”

He said the committee has seen good, consistent play from Miami over the last three weeks, emphasizing the play of quarterback Carson Beck being more like it was in the first five weeks of the season. Yurachek also pointed to Miami going from #18 in the first set of rankings all the way up to #12 in four weeks and that they are the best rising team in the rankings.

If the playoffs started today, Notre Dame would be on the road at Oklahoma.

The teams with first round byes remain the same: #1 Ohio St, #2 Indiana, #3 Texas A&M & #4 Georgia.

There will be two more sets of rankings, one following this week’s regular season finales and then after conference championship games.

If the playoffs started today…. It would look like this:
#12 Tulane** at #5 Texas Tech (winner to face #4 Georgia)
#9 Notre Dame at #8 Oklahoma (winner to face #1 Ohio State)
#11 Virginia* at #6 Oregon (winner to face #3 Texas A&M)
#10 Alabama at #7 Ole Miss (winner to face #2 Indiana)

*Georgia Tech is the projected ACC Champion
**Tulane is the projected highest ranked Group of 5 Champion
