Notre Dame left out of College Football Playoff; IU ranked #1
Notre Dame is out of the College Football Playoffs.
The final rankings were released on Sunday and the Irish were on the outside looking in with #9 Alabama and #10 Miami claiming the final at large spots.
After moving ahead of Notre Dame last Tuesday following a narrow win over 5-7 rival Auburn, Alabama did not drop one spot in the final rankings despite a 28-7 loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship game. The Crimson Tide were the only ranked team to lose in their conference championship game that did not drop at least one spot in the final rankings. Ohio St dropped one spot to #2, BYU dropped one spot to #12, Virginia dropped two spots to #17 and North Texas dropped one spot to #25.
BYU dropping is what cost Notre Dame its spot in the playoffs. They had been ranked between Notre Dame and Miami but the lost to Texas Tech 34-7 in the Big 12 Championship Game. That put Notre Dame and Miami back-to-back in the rankings. Committee chair Hunter Yurachek said with the two teams side-by-side, he charged the room to go back and watch the week 1 matchup where Miami beat Notre Dame 27-24. They did and decided the head-to-head win was now worthy of putting Miami ahead of Notre Dame for the first time since the rankings had be revealed.
After not making the playoffs, Notre Dame withdrew its name from consideration to play in another bowl game.
“We appreciate all the support from our families and fans, and we’re hoping to bring the 12th national title to South Bend in 2026,” Notre Dame wrote in a statement on social media.
While the Irish are out, Indiana is the #1 overall seed after winning the Big Ten Championship over Ohio State. The Hoosiers will have a 1st round bye and will head to the Rose Bowl on New Years Day to face the winner of #8 Oklahoma and #9.
