Knox star Myles McLaughlin named Mr. Football in Indiana
Knox senior Myles McLaughlin was named Mr. Football in Indiana on Monday.
He is the most prolific rusher in the history of the state and captured the attention of so many across the country as he attempted to break the nation’s all time rushing record.
McLaughlin finished his Knox career as the nation’s 3rd all time leading rusher with 11,839 yards. He also finished with two national records. His 4,846 yards rushing this season and his 71 rushing touchdowns are both the most of any player in a single season in the history of high school football across the country.
He led Knox to a 13-1 record and a trip to SemiState for the 2nd time in three seasons. Before SemiState, McLaughlin told Sports Michiana he didn’t see a season like this coming.
“I never expected to have such a good season but I always know what our goal was and that we could to get it but all these records and everything that’s been happening, I never would have thought of it,” McLaughlin said.
As McLaughlin’s performances grew and grew, so did the recognition across the country. NFL Star Derrick Henry gave McLaughlin a shoutout as McLaughlin was attempting to chase down his national rushing record. Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski also broke down some of McLaughlin’s film, loving what he was seeing.
“That was definitely really crazy–never in my life I thought that would happen to me especially,” McLaughlin said of the shoutouts from Henry and Gronkowski. “It’s really cool. A lot of stress on me but it’s all right, I love it.”
As that attention grew and McLaughlin received more and more interview requests, he said it was his teammates, coaches and the school that helped him manage it all. McLaughlin gives credit to his offensive line and his teammates for helping him achieve what he has.
The Redskins won sectional titles in each of his four seasons. For his 4-year career, McLaughlin averaged an incredible 9.8 yards per carry and finished with 174 career touchdown runs. He was also a long time starter at safety for Russ Radtke’s Redskins.
He will play running back at Murray State next season.
