Milestones, trophies highlight Saturday prep slate
A number of milestones were reached Saturday and plenty of hardware was passed out with holiday tournaments dominating the high school basketball schedule.
Much of the focus was on Syracuse, where at least three milestones were achieved. Wawasee big man Stephen Akase scored his 1000th career point and head coach Joe Luce won his 400th career game as the Warrior boys held off LaVille, 39-37, to win their own holiday tourney. With four wins in two days, Wawasee is 8-3 for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
Earlier in the day, LaVille coach Michael Edison picked up career win 250 as the Lancers advanced to the title game with a 58-40 triumph over South Newton.
Three boys teams stayed unbeaten. In Michigan, Benton Harbor moved to 10-0 with an 81-40 thrashing of Vicksburg, Bremen’s boys team is 7-0 for the first time since 1956, as the Lions downed Rochester, 55-42. And Fairfield is now 6-0 after shooting 68% from the field in a 62-47 dismantling of Concord.
Four girls teams won holiday tourney trophies. Warsaw continued its domination, clubbing Columbia City, 80-36, to win its own tournament. The Tigers have won 26 consecutive home games.
In South Bend, Elkhart captured the crown of the Adams tournament, beating Marian in the finale, 64-37. North Judson claims the title of the Plymouth Holiday Tourney, beating the host Pilgrims, 43-34. And John Glenn wins its 8th straight, beating the host Tri-Township, 23-19, at that tournament.
