Shrewsberry charges ref after controversial ND loss
(Berkeley) — In a city that has been given the nickname “Berzerkely”, this was an ending that lived up to the name.
Cal took the lead with a four-point play on a controversial foul call with 5.5 seconds remaining and Notre Dame coach Micah Shrewsberry charged after an official after a 72-71 Irish loss here at Haas Pavilion Friday night.
Notre Dame owned a 71-68 lead as Cal inbounded in the backcourt with 9.9 seconds remaining. Irish defender Logan Imes appeared to be trying to foul Dai Dai Ames as he crossed half court. However, the foul was not called until Ames swished a 22-footer from the left wing.
Officials reversed the call after watching replay, then went back to the original call, counting the basket that tied the game. Ames then went to the foul line and completed the four-point play that gave Cal the lead.
Notre Dame’s Braedon Shrewsberry missed a three-point attempt at the horn. Immediately, Micah Shrewsberry chased after one of the officials leaving the floor, having to be held back by Notre Dame team personnel while shouting at the referee.
The loss drops Notre Dame to 10-5 overall and 1-1 in ACC play. Cal is now 13-2 and 1-1 in league play.
The ending overshadows a game in which Notre Dame missed 10 free throws and countless layups, yet still managed to rally from a seven-point deficit with seven minutes remaining. A pair of Cole Certa three-pointers sparked a 9-0 Irish run that had Notre Dame leading 67-63 with 29 seconds remaining.
The Irish now have to sit on this loss for eight days before taking the floor at Purcell Pavilion, Saturday, January 10 vs. Clemson.
