Mydin Burgher scored 14 points and hit critical free throws down the stretch as the Warsaw boys basketball team defeated Goshen 49-41 in overtime Friday, handing the #8 RedHawks their first loss of the season.
Sam McDaniels hit two huge 3-pointers, including what proved to be the game winner in overtime to finish with 11 points. The Tigers improved to 6-6 overall and picked up their first win in Northern Lakes Conference play. Now at 1-2 in the NLC, Warsaw avoid their first 0-3 start in the NLC since 1982.
Goshen falls to 10-1, missing out on the program’s first 11-0 start ever. They now fall into a multi way tie at the top of the NLC at 2-1 in league play.
Goshen jumped out to a 8-3 lead in the 1st quarter before the Tigers stormed back for 13 straight points and built the lead to double digits. Matt Moore had his team hold the ball for a number of minutes in the 2nd quarter, which drew boos from the RedHawk faithful who made the drive down from Goshen. Goshen hit a 3 at the end of the 2nd quarter to pull within 5 at the half.
Warsaw built the lead back to double digits in the 3rd before Goshen closed back within 5 headed to the 4th.
The RedHawks ralled again to force overtime but the youthful Tigers didn’t wilt in the in the extra session and pulled away to win it.
Goshen senior Levi Sawatzky scored 9 points, finishing one point shy of 1,000 for his career. He now sits at 999. Braxston Cline lead the RedHawks with 14.
