Irish women get Senior Night win over Syracuse

(Notre Dame) — It was Senior Night at Purcell Pavilion, but the junior stole the show.

Hannah Hidalgo scored a game-high 27 points to go along with eight rebounds, seven assists and seven steals as Notre Dame’s women’s basketball team raised its record to 19-9 with a 72-62 win over Syracuse.

How rare is that stat line? Hidalgo became just the second player in the country this season to record at least 20 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and seven steals in a game, joining Liv McGill from Florida. Furthermore, Hidalgo is just the third player to achieve that stat line in a major conference game since the 1turn of the century.

Senior Cass Prosper added 16 points and seven rebounds, while classmate Malaya Cowles tallied 13 points.

“We’re making the right decisions, but the biggest thing is always our defense” noted Prosper. “I feel that’s where we’re actually clicking. We’re getting a lot of steals. We’re forcing turnovers.”

In fact, the Irish forced 2 Orange turnovers, the fourth consecutive game where an opponent has had 20 or more miscues.

“They have really matured this season,” said Irish head coach Niele Ivey, after her team’s sixth win in the last seven games. “We’ve gone through a lot this season.  The experiences we’ve overcome this season is why you’re seeing that toughness now.”

Syracuse actually held a 48-47 lead with a minute left in the third, before a Cowles layup gave the Irish the lead headed to the fourth.

A jumper from Hidalgo followed by a three-pointer from Vanessa de Jesus quickly pushed the lead to six and Notre Dame was never seriously threatened after that.

The Irish wrap up the regular season on the road, taking on No. 10 Louisville at 4 p.m. Sunday. The game will air on ESPN2.
