Irish women get road upset of #10 Louisville
(Louisville) — Any college basketball team wants to be playing its best in March.
Mission accomplished for the Notre Dame women.
Behind another All-American effort from Hannah Hidalgo, Notre Dame downed #10 Louisville at the Yum Center Sunday, 65-62, for its 20th win of the season. The victory clinches the #5 seed for the Irish entering next week’s Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
Hidalgo played like the star that she is, scoring 30 points, while garnering 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals.
“I’m so proud of how we played,” said Hidalgo, who likely wrapped up her 7th ACC Player of the Week honor. “We fought all the way until the last buzzer.”
“For us to win this game on the road to finish off the ACC regular season, I couldn’t be more proud,” beamed Notre Dame head coach NIele Ivey, as her team won for the seventh time in the last eight games. “This group is resilient. This group has gone through a lot. This group trusts each other, they believe in each other. It’s really rewarding to see the growth and development, the maturity and confidence we’re playing with.”
Vanessa de Jesus helped the Irish make a big run in the second quarter, raining in four threes as Notre Dame built a 36-24 halftime lead. DeJesus scored all 14 of her points for the game in the first half.
Tajianna Roberts keyed an 8-0 run for Louisville late in the 3rd to bring the Cards back within two, before Hidalgo stemmed the tide with a three at the quarter buzzer to make it 50-45 Irish head to the fourth.
Louisville took advantage of Hidalgo’s foul trouble to take a 60-56 lead with five minutes left, but the Irish had one more answer. Mikayla Cowles tied the game at 60 on a tip-in basket before Hidalgo gave Notre Dame the lead with a steal and layin with 2:10 left.
The Cards trailed 63-62 with the ball, when Hidalgo poked away Roberts dribble at midcourt with 14 seconds left. After the Irish star sank two free throws, Louisville’s Imari Berry missed a three in the final seconds and the Irish clinched the win.
Notre Dame will face the winner of No. 12 seed Miami vs. No. 13 seed Stanford in a second-round ACC tournament contest at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5 in Duluth, Georgia.
