It was expected to be one of the most exciting sectional championship games in boys basketball in a long time in Michiana and it lived up to the hype.

It was so good, we even got overtime.

Peyton Miamba scored 17 points and Ryder Place hit some clutch three pointers down the stretch as the #8 Saint Joseph boys basketball team defeated #13 Riley 62-53 in an overtime thriller Saturday night at the Cave in Mishawaka to capture the 4A Sectional Championship.

Saint Joe, which moved up in class after winning the 3A state championship a year ago, will now face #6 Northridge in the 4A Regionals next Saturday.

Riley, the defending 4A sectional and regional champions, led by as many as 12 points in the 1st half and were up by 10 into the 2nd half but Saint Joe was able to close to 44-40 by the end of the 3rd quarter.

The Huskies tied it up then in the 4th to force overtime and took control from there.

Elijah King, who battled leg cramps on a warm night inside The Cave, finished with 12 points for Saint Joe. Place, Nick Shrewsberry and KJ Avery all scored nine. Miamba was our Reliance Player of the Game with his 17 points.

It’s the 14th straight win for Saint Joe, which improves to 21-4 on the season after defeating Riley for the 2nd time this year.

Tyrese Jones was held to nine points in his final high school game as he finishes with 1,617 points in his illustrious prep career. Isaiah Packer led Riley with 14 points and Tree Johnson scored 12.

Riley finishes at 21-5 with four of their five losses coming to Saint Joe and Northridge, the two teams that will play for a regional title next week.
