(Bangor) — Josh Hood talks about his Brandywine girls basketball program being one where “standards never die”.

He has now become one of the standards for coaching excellence.

Wednesday night, Hood — who previously coached boys teams at Cassopolis and Coloma — won his 500th career game as his Lady Bobcats captured their third straight regional with a 62-50 triumph over Kalamazoo Christian.

“You never think about personal milestones in this profession,” Hood told Sports Michiana after the game. “I’m hoping one day my kids will be able to look back on their dad and be proud. It’s a network of working with amazing kids, coaches, parents, community members and administrators over the past 25 years. It’s also having a supportive spouse and two children at home who allow me to be away so often while chasing my passion.”

Freshman Zaya Price led the way for Brandywine, scoring 10 of her game-high 24 points in the first quarter. The Bobcats speedy full court press bedeviled Kalamazoo Christian, and the Comets never looked comfortable early.

Juniors Lily Gill tallied 16, while classmate MacKenna Price scored 13, going 11 of 12 at the foul line. Senior Karleigh Byrd added nine.

Brandywine, now 25-1, will face Hart (16-9) in the state quarterfinals next Tuesday. That game will be played at Kalamazoo Central HS with tipoff at 7 p.m.
