You can watch a replay of the the Mass of Christian Burial for legendary former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz held on Monday at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame at the link above.
University President, Father Bob Dowd CSC, presided over the Mass. Former University President, Father John Jenkins, delivered the Gospel and Homily.
Members of the Holtz family served as pallbearers and readers. Lou’s son Skip delivered moving remarks at the end of the Mass in tribute to his father.
Hundreds of of Lou’s former players were in attendance as were current Irish football coach Marcus Freeman, former football coach Brian Kelly and former basketball coach Digger Phelps. Lou’s former broadcast partners at ESPN, Rece Davis and Mark May also attended.
The Mass ended with the playing of “Notre Dame, our Mother” and “Amazing Grace”.
Following the Mass of Christian Burial, the public lined both sides of Notre Dame Avenue in wintry conditions as the Holtz family led the funeral procession from Notre Dame Circle to the main entrance of the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
At the request of the Holtz family, graveside services were private.
A public visitation was held Sunday night at the Basilica.
Holtz, who led Notre Dame to the 1988 national championship, passed away at the age of 89 on March 4th. One of the most popular coaches of his generation, Holtz won 249 games as a collegiate head coach with 100 of those victories earned at Notre Dame from 1986 through 1996. He led the Irish to the 1988 National Championship with a 12-0 record capped by a victory over West Virginia in the 1989 Fiesta Bowl. The ‘88 title season began a 64-9-1 (.871) run for Holtz at Notre Dame that included a 23-game win streak, back-to-back 12-win seasons for the first time in school history and a program record nine consecutive bowl game appearances.
