Berger out as Marian’s boys basketball coach
There will be no happy send off for Robb Berger at Marian.
One of the area’s most successful coaches, Berger was informed on Wednesday that he will not return next season as Marian’s boys basketball coach.
“Robb Berger’s service as coach of Marian’s varsity boys basketball team has concluded,” Marian said in a statement to Sports Michiana. “Marian High School thanks him for his service.”
Marian did not give a reason why Berger was being let go but Berger was suspended for Marian’s regional game after what Marian said at the time was a repeated IHSAA violation of allowing a non member of the program to practice with the team. Marian had said before the regional game that Berger would coach in SemiState had Marian won its regional game. The Knights lost the game and saw their season come to an end.
According to sources, there was an altercation during practice between a student athlete on the team and the non team member. Police are investigating.
Berger was 336-118 in 19 seasons at Marian (two stints) & 436-217 in 28 seasons overall.
His first head coaching job was at Marian for three season from 1996 to 1999. He then went to Wawasee for a year before an eight year run at Mishawaka. He returned to Marian in 2010 and led the Knights to five sectional championships (including this season), two regional titles and a trip to the state finals in 2022 of the course of the next 16 seasons.
