Westview, Triton each finish as state runner-up

(Indianapolis) — Two boys basketball teams from the Sports Michiana coverage area, Westview and Triton, both came up short in their bids for state championships Saturday.

Westview dropped a thriller to Parke Heritage in the 2A State Championship, 57-56, while Barr-Reeve used a strong second half to surge past Triton, 50-37, in the 1A title tilt.

The 2A game was an absolute classic, with both teams performing at high level.  Parke Heritage (27-4), looking for its first state championship in any sport, shot an amazing 59 percent from the field, but couldn’t get any breathing room as Westview nailed 12 of 26 three-point attempts.

Westview had a one-point lead and the ball with under 30 seconds left, when a turnover on the in-bounds pass gave the Wolves the ball. Senior point guard Treigh Schelsky penetrated down the right side of the lane and left the ball for Isaac Pickel, who dropped it in with 10 seconds remaining.

Westview (27-2) came back down the floor with Austin Schlabach driving. His right-handed layup danced on the rim twice before falling off in heartbreaking fashion for Warriors fans.

Senior Kaden Grau scored 14 points with seven rebounds for Westview and received the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award. Schlabach scored 13 points with eight assists.

In the 1A championship, the game was tied 30-30 late in the 3rd quarter, when Barr-Reeve senior Korben Boyd took over.  Previously scoreless, Boyd scored eight straight points overlapping the third and and fourth quarters to put the Vikings, now 28-1, in command.  Boyd would finish with 11 points and also take home the Mental Attitude Award

The normally sharp-shooting Trojans could only connect on 2-of-15 attempts from three-point range, leading to their downfall.

Senior Julian Swanson scored 16 points, while classmate Jayden Overmyer added 10 in their final games for the Trojans, who finish as state runner-up for a fourth time in school history, finishing the season with a 25-4 mark.
