(Notre Dame) — A top-10 showdown and a national television audience…that’s the perfect stage for Notre Dame’s backcourt.
Hannah Hidalgo scored 30 points with eight rebounds, while Olivia Miles added 18 points and six assists, as #10 Notre Dame toppled fourth-ranked Texas, 80-70 in overtime, at a raucous Purcell Pavilion Thursday night.
A shorthanded Irish team, using only six players, notched its second win over a top-five opponent, raising its overall record to 6-2. Texas is now 7-1.
Notre Dame used several highlight-reel plays in the first half to counter the hot three-point shooting of Texas’ Shay Holle and grab a 39-34 halftime lead.
Longhorn star Madison Booker scored five of her team-high 20 points in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, tying the game at 55. The game stayed tight through the fourth quarter, with Notre Dame grabbing a 68-66 lead on a Miles layup with 2.6 seconds left. Liatu King was called for a foul in the backcourt with one second remaining and Rori Harmon drained both free throws to send the game to overtime.
The Irish broke it open in the extra session on back-to-back threes by Hidalgo and Sonia Citron, who finished with 18 points. Texas missed three straight three-point shots and the Irish iced the game at the foul line.
“This feels amazing,” exclaimed Citron afterwards. “I’m so proud of my team for responding (to two straight losses). I couldn’t be happier.”
Notre Dame now packs up and heads to Syracuse for a noon tipoff Sunday.
