Holiday tourney action highlighted both the boys and girls slate of high school basketball action Friday.
On the boys side, St. Joseph, the top-ranked team in 3A, survived a scare at the Homestead Tournament, holding off Hamilton Southeastern, 88-85, in the morning round of the Homestead Tournament. Elijah King scored 26 to lead Eric Gaff’s squad, while Nick Shrewsberry added 23. The Huskies had an easier time in the nightcap, downing Fort Wayne Carroll, 71-50. St. Joseph is now 8-0.
At the Harrison Classic in West Lafayette, South Bend Washington needed overtime to down Harrison, 75-64. Ryan Varga’s Panthers are now 6-1.
Goshen had the comeback of the day, trailing Munster by 10 before rallying to tame the Mustangs, 55-49, in the opening round of the LaPorte Holiday Tournament.
As for the girls, Northridge may have had the most impressive win of the day, as Ella Mohamed scored 18 to lead the Raiders past previously unbeaten Floyd Central in the Interra Bank Classic. Doug Springer’s Lady Raiders are now 11-2.
South Bend Riley earned a split at the Hammond Morton Invitational, downing Gary West, 47-30, before falling to the host Governors, 74-29. Despite the loss, Karl Columbus’ Cats are now 7-6, and that’s the third most wins in a season by a Riley girls basketball team in the last 20 years.
