Hidalgo scores 34 as Irish women win 14th straight
(Louisville) — In the hometown of Muhammad Ali, it was Notre Dame’s Hannah Hidalgo who floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee.
The talented Irish sophomore guard scored 34 points with six rebounds and five assists to lead Niele Ivey’s team to its 14th consecutive win, an 89-71 triumph over Louisville at the KFC Yum Center.
Olivia Miles added 17 points, while Liatu King recorded another double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds as the 3rd-ranked Irish raised their record to 19-2 overall and an unblemished 10-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Notre Dame came out firing, building a 20-6 lead in the first seven minutes of the game, but Louisville worked its way back in the first half, taking a 29-28 lead on Tajianna Roberts’ three midway through the second. The Cardinals benefitted from 13 first-half turnovers by the Irish, who committed an alarming 23 for the game.
Hidalgo worked her magic late in the half, shurgging off a defender to beat the shot clock with a three that gave Notre Dame a 39-38 lead at the break. Then, in the third quarter, Hidalgo and Miles combined for 20 points as the Irish created some breathing room. Hidalgo scored 10 herself in a 12-6 run where the Irish expanded the lead to 59-50.
It never got closer than that the rest of the way, as the Irish shot 55 percent from the field, while holding Louisville to 36 percent.
Notre Dame now looks ahead to a Thursday night date against Stanford at Purcell Pavilion. Tipoff is at 8:30 p.m.
