Irish men fall at Florida State

(Tallahassee) — Suffice to say, Micah Shrewsberry and his Notre Dame men’s basketball team will not have any sunny memories of the Sunshine State.

For the second straight game in the state of Florida, Notre Dame couldn’t take advantage of a struggling team. Florida State snapped a four-game losing streak, downing the Irish, 67-60.

Jamir Watkins scored 21 to lead the Seminoles, who were definitely inspired after Monday’s announcement that longtime head coach Leonard Hamilton would be retiring at season’s end.

A Kebba Njie tip-in with 12:10 left in the first half gave the Irish a 17-7 lead in the first half before Florida State embarked on an 18-0 run. The Irish did their part to help the cause missing seven straight shots and turning the ball over six times during that stretch.

Notre Dame righted the ship with a 90 run before halftime, with Markus Burton scoring eight straight. The Penn High alum once again led the Irish with 25 points.

Burton would give the Irish a brief 46-45 lead with a free throw midway through the second half, but Malique Ewin took charge for the Seminoles down the stretch. The FSU forward scored seven straight with less than two minutes left to put the game away.

Notre Dame falls to10-12 overall and 4-7 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Irish are now a woeful 3-9 in games decided by single digits. Virginia Tech comes to Purcell Pavilion Saturday afternoon at 1 for an “Irish Wear Green” game.
