Friday marked sectional semifinal night in the IHSAA girls basketball sectionals
In Class 4A at Warsaw, #5 Warsaw and #9 Northridge advanced with easy wins. Brooks Winchester led four players in double figures as Warsaw shook off a slow start to beat Elkhart, 67-36. Meanwhile, the Raiders used a 19-2 start as the impetus to blow past Goshen, 63-21.
At LaPorte, Riley reaches the championship game for the first time since 2004, downing LaPorte, 52-44. The ‘Cats will now face #4 South Bend Washington, after the Panthers held Michigan City scoreless in the third on the way to a 61-32 triumph.
In our Sports Michiana Games of the Week at the 3A St. Joseph sectional, Dre Weddington scored 13 to lead John Glenn to a 36-30 win over a gallant Marian squad. In the nightcap, Kayla Herron scored a career-high 22 as Culver Academy eliminated St. Joseph, 61-38.
At 3A Fairfield, the host Falcons need a fourth-quarter rally to get past Tippecanoe Valley, 60-51. Eva Herbert and Madison Jones combined for 43 points for Fairfield. They face #5 Columbia City, which crushed Wawasee, 49-23.
In 2A, Bremen set a school record for wins in a season, going to 23-2 with a 46-27 victory over LaVille. Eliana Grubbs led the way with 20 points. Bremen will meet conference foe Knox, a 58-18 winner of Career Academy.
In 1A, Elkhart Christian won its first sectional game since 2011, topping Triton, 51-33. The Eagles will face North Judson after the Lady Jays downed Culver, 29-21.
