(Bloomington) — Forty years ago today, Bob Knight carved a lasting memory in the Indiana-Purdue rivalry, tossing a chair across the court mid-game. Today, Mike Woodson used that very chair to coach in, and maybe it gave his team a little inspiration.
Down by 12 at the half, Indiana roared back in the second half to upset archrival and 13th-ranked Purdue, 75-58, before a raucous crowd at Simon Skojdt Assembly Hall. The victory raised Indiana’s record to 16-11 and kept alive the Hoosiers’ hopes of making the NCAA Tournament.
Former Culver Academy star Trey Galloway scored 15 points with nine assists, while Malik Reneau added 15 of his own to join the 1000-point club.
The Hoosiers opened the second half on a 28-2 run, forcing 11 second-half turnovers by Purdue. Trailing 40-39, Anthony Leal saved a turnover directly to Luke Goode, whose layup bucket and bump gave the Hoosiers a lead they would not relinquish.
Indiana now has a road win at Michigan State and a home win over Purdue. The Hoosiers need to build on the momentum when they visit Penn State Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, Purdue has now lost four straight, falling to 19-9. The Boilermakers look for answers prior to a date with UCLA at Mackey Arena Friday night.
